Switching Off
What a conference, what a buzz, what can I say?
AGI GeoCommunity '09 is over.
This blog is now switching off.
That said, the GeoCommunity is loading loads of great conference geostuff from to our newer www.geocommunitylive.com blog. Take a look, it's great.
Thanks to all who organised, sponsored, got involved, served and attended the third and biggest AGI conference in Stratford-upon-Avon.
And spare a thought for our veteran conference chairman Steven Feldman who'll now have more time to devote to the fortunes of Arsenal!
See you at AGI GeoCommunity '10!!

Get in there NOW!

Okay, some facts:
- All sponsor/exhibitor places are sold out!
- The Conference Icebreaker is sold out!
- All 'three day' delegate packages are sold out!
- We have very few 'two day' packages left - these are bargains to be had - BOOK NOW!
- We are 'level pegging' delegates numbers wise with 2008 and 15% up on 2007!
- There is more content and more speakers than before!
- There will be new formats like 'soapbox' and the conference 'geocommunitylive' blogsite with twitter feeds, etc!
- BUT we can still offer delegate day passes for BOTH conference days!
This isn't a case of "mmm what will it be like in 2009?", more a case of "can I miss this event?"

Avineon (UK) take Silver Sponsorship
Very pleased to say that new AGI corporate member Avineon (UK) http://www.avineon.com/ has taken a Silver Sponsorship place at AGI GeoCommunity '09.
Avineon serves clients throughout the EU from offices in the United Kingdom, France, and Belgium. Employing over fifty local staff, these offices provide direct support to our European clients and coordinate remote support tasks performed at Avineon India. Avineon Europe offers a full range of GIS, engineering, and IT services.
It's great to have them onboard for their first ever AGI conference.

More hotel rooms up for grabs
Each year we can only book a certain number of rooms for the conference in advance. This is due to how hotels work.
It's like this. Hotels will always offer a better price for block bookings, but in a popular spot like Stratford-upon-Avon, they will not generally give up all their rooms far in advance knowing that pricier single bookings are likely to be had nearer the time, or they may be balancing anticipated commitments to other regular customers.
As we get closer to conference time, if vacant rooms are still available, hotels can be encouraged to let us have a few more as they hedge their bets. Last year was not so good for grabbing extra rooms bearing in mind David Tennant was playing Hamlet at the RSC to great acclaim.
But this year we've managed to source a few more hotel rooms to bundle into conference packages. This means that we now can offer AGI members a certain number on a first-come-first-served basis and at a discount.
Why a discount? This is because we take on a commitment to pay for them. Encouraging more delegates gives them a good deal, boosts the conference and ensures we meet our booking commitments.
Why just AGI members? Simple. AGI members are fee paying supporters of the AGI and it is fair to give them the benefit.
When these hotel rooms are sold they'll probably be a token amount left over to cover contingencies, but essentially we'll be onto selling conference day tickets.
If you haven't booked already, this really is time to do so.

On yer soapbox
Okay you've got the ingredients ... an audience, a bar, a platform and a mic. Here is your chance to get onstage for 5 minutes and appeal to the crowd. All we need is you!
Gob-iron in hand you can cover anything geospatial...
Are you the Danny DeVito of Derived Data, the Frank Carson of Free our Data, or the Johnny Vegas of vector based GIS?
To explain ... this year for fun we will be running a series of 'lightning pitches' aptly called 'Soapbox'. Each pitch will consist of 15 slides over 5 minutes with auto-timed pauses of 20 seconds between each. This will take place in the Hotel bar in the time after the first day's papers and before the AGI Party.
Participants must stick to the 15 slides each 20 seconds rule. The only tomatoes the audience can hurl are digital ones!
Applicants for the Soapbox must be conference delegates and will be selected by popular vote by AGI members before the conference. If you wish to put something forward all we need is the following information:
1. NAME;
2. ORGANISATION;
3. 140 character maximum title.
Sent to soapbox@agi.org.uk
